Performed an abbreviated neurologic exam. No obvious cranial nerve deficits. Thoracic limbs appear wnl. P was not very cooperative for pelvic limb assessment. Is able to move and grip both feet. Did not participate in hopping or placing evaluations. Could not elicit patellar or gastroc reflexes bilaterally.

Released p into aviary to further assess. Flies well. On initial landing on perch at opposite end of aviary, p did not land as strongly on the left leg, but on subsequent landings p was more even. Is able to grip onto the side slats of the aviary with both feet. Placed Blue 050 band on right leg.

Patient taken to CTH for repeat neuro examination and radiographs. Patient had been observed to walk and stand over the weekend, but appeared to tire easily. During repeate neuro examination, weakness and muscle atrophy of the left leg were noted. Proprioception of the left foot had improved when compared to last Thursday's exam.

Patient anesthestized with isoflurane via facemask and VD and L lateral views of the pelvic limbs were obtained. No osseous abnormalities were noted at this time. Muscle atrophy was observed over the left leg. Patient recovered uneventfully from anesthesia.

Rec continuing meloxicam and cage rest and repeating a neuro exam every 2-3 days. Once leg has returned to normal function, meloxicam can be discontinued. If patient maintains function without medication, okay for patient to move to aviary to begin flight rehabilitation.

Avian influenza testing returned negative. Performed neurologic exam not including cranial nerves. Left leg had positive withdrawal reflex, deep pain positive, proprioceptive defecits. Right leg appeared normal. Based on this, the lesion is suspected to be in the lumbar spinal cord. No fractures or obvious defects were palpable in the legs, thus we suspect a spinal or pelvic lesion. Dehydration has resolved. Plan to take radiographs and recheck chemistry panel tomorrow.

Upon restraint and examination, patient has moderate subcutaneous emphysema on the dorsum near the sacrolumbar region. No bruising is evident. Palpated up and down both legs, no significant findings. Patient is euhydrated today, so did not administer SQ fluids. Meloxicam intended to start tomorrow 10/18. Upon release back into enclosure, patient would not grip perch with left leg, though appeared to kick out with it.

------------- PHYSICAL EXAM FINDINGS ----------------
Attending Veterinarian: Dr. Seth Oster
Observational examination
Mentation: BAR
Posture: Not standing
Vital stats
Heart rate: 290 bpm
Respiratory rate: 50 brpm
Auscultation: No apparent arrhythmias, murmurs auscultated. Lung sounds appropriate.
Mucous membranes: Pink, moist
Dehydration: 5-10%
Comments: Est. 5% dehydrated due to stringy mucus
Oral cavity: Stringy mucus; appears normal
Wings: Within normal limits
Legs/Feet: Left foot is not gripping well, but can kick. Decreased use. Right leg appears normal.
Neurologic: Full neurologic exam not performed.
BCS: 2
Problem list: 1. Decreased use of left leg
2. Not standing
3. Underweight
4. Dehydrated 5%
Diagnosis: 1. Traumatic injury - presumptive
2. Underweight - possibly as result of traumatic injury vs. other
3. Dehydrated due to not eating
Assessment: Left foot is not gripping but can kick, and bird is not standing. Must differentiate neurologic defect vs. traumatic injury (e.g. fracture, tendon injury). Slightly underweight, whether due to trauma vs. other; suggests a more chronic problem. Dehydrated, likely secondary to slightly underweight. Submitted avian influenza swab. Bloodwork performed showed evidence of muscular injury, suggesting trauma at some point fairly recently. Will plan to continue fluids, feed, pain medications (will start 10/17 due to overdose on 10/16)
Plan: Tx:
